He is the obvious companion for Lucie Manette, who is the female embodiment of these same attributes. Darnay has gone so far as to distance himself from his birthright in France and begin a new life in England. He hates the social system that causes some people to be valued because they are nobility, while the “lower” levels of society are considered expendable. Throughout the novel, he is steadfast in adhering to the qualities of honor and integrity. He is a noble man by birth who strives to live that virtue. Charles DarnayĬharles Darnay seems to be the epitome of a hero. Is a hero someone who shows exceptional bravery during a time of crisis? Is a hero someone who finds a way to do the right thing in difficult circumstances? Is a hero made through a single defining event or through years of good works? It’s good to have an idea of what you think it takes to be a hero before analyzing Dickens’ characters. One thing to do before you start thinking about the two characters is to define what it means to be hero. Yet, in A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens presents readers with two very different men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who each could be pointed to as the hero of the novel. In most novels, it’s easy to pick the hero. “Rachel Kushner’s second novel, The Flamethrowers, is scintillatingly alive, and also alive to artifice. “Rachel Kushner’s fearless, blazing prose ignites the 70s New York art scene and Italian underground of The Flamethrowers.” “ I loved Rachel Kushner’s The Flamethrowers.” Ardent, vulnerable, and bold, Reno is a fiercely memorable observer, superbly realized by Rachel Kushner. Reno is submitted to a sentimental education of sorts-by dreamers, poseurs, and raconteurs in New York and by radicals in Italy, where she goes with her lover to meet his estranged and formidable family. Her arrival coincides with an explosion of activity-artists colonize a deserted and industrial SoHo, stage actions in the East Village, blur the line between life and art. Reno, so-called because of the place of her birth, comes to New York intent on turning her fascination with motorcycles and speed into art. “Superb…Scintillatingly alive…A pure explosion of now.”- The New Yorker NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST * NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW * New York magazine’s #1 Book of the Year * Best Book of 2013 by: The Wall Street Journal Vogue O, The Oprah Magazine Los Angeles Times The San Francisco Chronicle The New Yorker Time Flavorwire Salon Slate The Daily Beast I’ve always loved animals which is why I gravitated so strongly towards this book, and I too have strong connections with my own pets. The second of two recommendations from my own childhood, Born to Run is a wonderful story that both me and my mum enjoyed when I was a child. Because all the characters in the book have complexity that is different for each one of them, it makes it way more dramatic. At first the three friends didn’t trust each other enough to share their deepest secrets, but in the end they trusted each other. One significant theme is that trust is gained through time, this is shown at the beginning and the end. Something that was interesting was that every chapter they would switch the character perspectives. Imagine this, a book with the most interesting mythology ever, by the author that has 3 national awards! The book: Heroes of Olympus: The Son of Neptune is worth your while reading, because the theme is very strong, but most importantly the character development is very complex.Īll the characters in the book have complexity that is different for each one of them which makes it way more dramatic. During this time, Wells joined a debate society which kindled his interests in social reform, and later, socialism. Excelling in academics, Wells won a scholarship and went on to study biology at what is now the Imperial College in London. Wells eventually managed to escape the apprentice’s lot by getting himself into a grammar school, where he studied as a senior student and worked as a mentor to younger students. Wells’s family had always struggled financially, and as a teenager Wells apprenticed in a number of trades, all of which were miserable. To pass the time, his father loaned a stack of novels from the public library which Wells tore through, losing himself in the tales of far-off worlds and beginning his lifelong love of literature. As a child, Wells suffered a badly broken leg that left him bedridden for several months. Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu – I’ll mainly use Zhuangzi but it’s the same guy FYI) is the most significant of Daoism’s interpreters to have followed the enigmatic, and likely fictional, Lao Tzu. Walking a frayed and weathered tightrope between transcendental enlightenment and radical idealistic fancy, many will find the works of Zhuangzi in ’The Book of Chuang Tzu’ to be unrealistic and impractical in our modern times (perhaps in Zhuangzi’s time as well), and in many ways I would agree, however, if you’ve an open mind and a good sense of humour, there is a lot to love about this particular Chinese Philosopher and his ideas. “When it comes to comprehending the Tao I am about as significant as a fly in vinegar!” - Confucius (Zhuangzi claims) One who asks about the Tao has never understood anything about the Tao.” - No Beginning (aka. ”To be questioned about the Tao and to give an answer means that you don’t know the Tao. The wisdom contained in these various sources is vast and can help you (or someone you know) to a speedy recovery and a stronger and brighter future. The Bible remains the best guide learning to have faith and that things do get better. The wisdom and parables contained in The Bible are the most helpful I have ever encountered in my life. Whether you are a religious person or not, or whether you choose to interpret it literally or metaphorically, The Bible is, was, and will forever be The Greatest Story Ever Told. I am aware that this will not go over well with many of my colleagues who want nothing to do with religion, but frankly I don't care. |
